At Help Me Grow Escambia, we are dedicated to supporting the growth and development of children in our community. As a program of The Arc Gateway, funded by Escambia Children’s Trust, we provide free developmental and behavioral screenings for children ages 0-8. Our goal is to empower families by connecting them with resources and services that can make a difference. One of the specialized services we offer is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) evaluation, conducted at the Pearl Nelson Center.
What is an ADOS Evaluation?
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, or ADOS, is a standardized diagnostic tool designed to assess and identify autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is widely regarded as the gold standard for autism diagnosis, as it evaluates a child’s social interactions, communication, and play in a structured environment. Unlike other diagnostic tools, the ADOS takes into account the child’s developmental level and age, making it highly adaptable and effective.
Who Can Be Evaluated?
Our ADOS evaluations are available for children between the ages of 1 and 6 who reside in Escambia County. These evaluations are ideal for children suspected of having autism. Whether you are a parent, caregiver, or professional, anyone can refer a child for an ADOS evaluation. However the parent/ guardian must give their permission for and participate in the evaluation process.
How Does the ADOS Evaluation Process Work?
At Help Me Grow Escambia, we follow a comprehensive, three-step process for ADOS evaluations:
- Parent Interview: This initial step allows our team to gather valuable insights into the child’s developmental history and any concerns the family may have.
- ADOS Evaluation: Conducted by an multi-disciplinary team, including an occupational therapist, a speech-language pathologist, and a pediatrician, this evaluation provides a detailed assessment of the child’s interactions and behaviors.
- Follow-Up Meeting: During this meeting, we review the evaluation results with the family, provide recommendations, and offer referrals to additional services if needed.
- Care Coordination: Our HMG Escambia Care Coordinator for Services can assist the family with referrals to resources in the community that are recommended by the multi-disciplinary evaluation team.
Benefits of an ADOS Evaluation
The ADOS evaluation offers several key benefits:
- Accurate Diagnosis: As the gold standard for autism diagnosis, the ADOS provides a reliable and comprehensive assessment.
- Timely Intervention: Early diagnosis of ASD allows families to access critical services and interventions during pivotal developmental stages.
- Personalized Recommendations: Following the evaluation, families receive tailored guidance and referrals to support their child’s specific needs.
- Collaborative Approach: With input from multiple professionals, including a pediatrician, occupational therapist, and speech-language pathologist, the evaluation ensures a holistic understanding of the child’s development.
